OEM GM A/C & Heating Parts

Your factory GM air conditioning and heating system keeps you comfortable no matter the weather outside. The mechanics involved in how your HVAC system cools, heats, and ventilates your passenger space aren't all that complicated, frankly.

Your HVAC System at Work

The heater's most simple. Hot coolant is drawn from the engine and into a heater core. A front-mounted fan blows over the core fins, which sends warm air through the vents and into the cabin. Your air conditioning system consists of four major parts. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant to convert it into a hot gas. The condenser then cools that gas and turns it into a liquid. The fluid then flows through the expansion valve and becomes a gas again, but at low pressure. Finally, an evaporator uses a fan to quickly cool the gas down again. The resulting chilled air is routed through the ducts to your air vents, where it disperses into the cabin.

How to Spot AC System Problems

Even the best AC system components can begin to fail, though. Here are some signs of that:

  • The cabin atmosphere gets steamy
  • You can't maintain a consistent cabin temperature
  • You notice the sweet smell of coolant
  • If you have trouble keeping your passenger space cool, check your cabin air filter first. If it's in good shape, then you'll want to examine the hoses and other AC system components. If something does need to be replaced, make sure that you use the best part for the job. That's going to be a genuine GM part, since they're the only ones that are guaranteed to fit your model.
