The Kinds of Brake Pads

There are four types. Organic brake pads are one. They last longer, work well in all kinds of weather, they're relatively quiet, and the dust they produce resists sticking to wheels. Metallic brake pads work even better, even at high heat. They offer a firmer feel when you press your brake pedal, and they resist fading. Carbon fiber brake pads are ultimately durable and functional at the highest temperatures, and they deliver the best stopping power. A vehicle can use any of these. However, carbon fiber and ceramic scatter heat best, so performance vehicles use them most often.

When and Why You Need to Replace Your Brake Pads

When to replace brake pads varies depending on how and where you drive. Normally, you should do it every 40,000 or 50,000 miles. There are signs it's time to change them, though. They include a brake warning light on the dash, damaged surfaces, whiny brakes, and longer stopping times. The worst symptoms of brakes going bad are vibration and grinding. The first indicates irregular pad wear due to rotor warp. The second indicates real-time rotor damage. The best way to tell if you have brake problems? Run an inspection.
