The core of any engine, however, is a block with a cylinder head. It has a piston for nearly every cylinder. It also has a camshaft and crankshaft, spark plugs, valves, a valve cover for every valve, and an oil sump (or oil pan), among other parts. The head and valve covers are on top of the engine. They seal the area to help keep gas from escaping, protect valves and other engine parts, and prevent oil leaks. The cylinder head has two valves: an intake valve and an exhaust valve. The first adjusts the air and fuel ratio inside the engine. The second adjusts how much exhaust the engine holds. The camshaft synchronizes valve activity. Engine pistons pressurize that mixture of gas and oxygen as they pump.

Spark plugs ignite the mix, burning it and releasing power for the engine to use. The crankshaft turns this power into rotary motion. A driveshaft works with a transmission to make wheels and tires move. The oil pan or sump stores the oil your engine uses to lubricate its parts during operation. Many other components, like gears, sprockets, rings, and bearings, make everything fit together as it should.
