OEM GM Headlights
GM headlights have several uses right from the factory, shining both low beams and high beams. Low-beam headlights, you use during everyday driving. They're adequate for lighting the way in most weather. High-beam headlights are for when it's very dark and no other traffic is coming. They shine wider, helping you see what's around you much better than a normal headlamp.
Any headlight will also work as a hazard light. Put two to four together, and you've got flashers. They inform drivers that you're in distress, of problems on the road, or that there's a dangerous situation nearby. Some GM models also have fog lights on higher trims. These shine lower with less glare, brightening your driving environment a lot better. They're ideal for bad weather.
The Three Kinds of Headlights
GM headlights come from the OEM in one of three lamp types. Halogen lamps are common in small cars. Xenon lamps, also called high-intensity discharge or HID lamps, fit in narrower housings. You'll find these in many sports cars. LED lamps, you can find in most newer vehicles. They're exceptionally energy-efficient, and they produce little heat.
What headlights does your GM vehicle need, then? That depends on body style. When to change a car light bulb doesn't. Replace Xenon lights when they weaken, about every three years. Change LED lights if they burn out or their electronics die. Change halogen lights every two years at least.
